"Fridge door?" Agate asked, either having forgotten the incident or else not having been involved in the first place. He scooped up his daughter, allowing the squirming girl to turn so that she could watch Sarah with unabashed interest.
Kay had beaten him to the punch -- Agate had been planning on dropping the question a little later, maybe a little less bluntly. But, well, what had been asked was out in the open now. Besides, he was just as curious. He had some minor qualms with the school girl -- where had Sandy come from? Had she been in Malton this entire time? She seemed as much like an outsider as most of the army duds dropped into Malton and left for the shamblers... too innocent, almost. Too clean, maybe. However, he knew that nothing was ever really all on the table at once with Sarah. He could always wait.

"It sprung to my mind to hide here a bit, can't forget your old home even if you decided to sack out a bit," she pointed out. "Besides, it's close to the holidays, and I guess I'm still a sucker for them..." she says to them with a shrug. "I ran into Sandy along the way, and she described someone a bit like Theo to be too familer, so I decided to let her tag along a bit. She seemed ok person, though no idea where she came from. She seems a bit TOO fresh for zombie bait, amiright?"

Kay raised her eyebrows at Sarah's explanation of the tag-along she'd picked up, and then frowned. She hadn't gotten a good look at the newcomer, aside from the shock of brightly-colored hair. "Well, whatever, as long as she's not going to go psycho-killer on us at random, or make off quiet-like with our stuff in the middle of the night."
As gruff as she was being, there was a part of Kay who was enjoying getting a good look at Sarah again. These long absences, they were interesting in a way, snapshots of changes in bearing and character she supposed.

Agate bounced Casey to keep the girl from crawling about, smiling at Sarah even if what she'd said didn't quite sit right. Kay seemed to voice his worries for him, however, so he set them aside for now. "So, kidlet, you remember Sarah?" Agate asked the child in his arms.
Casey shook her head, happily oblivious of anything a week past, let alone nearly a year! Agate, shrugging -- and making that gesture part of the jungle gym entertainment that he was currently offering -- replied, "well I guess it's time for re-introductions, then. Casey, meet Sarah. She and her friend might just be staying here for a little while. Wave to Sarah, lovey."
The child, wary but obviously curious, flashed a hand at the newcomer in a clumsy wave. "Hi-i," she added of her own volition, voice jouncing along with her body. She leaned across the open space towards Kay again, growing tired of her father for now.
Amongst all of this, Agate had to ask, "so you two are hiding out? You're not being tracked by someone, are you?"

"Just form the weather, it's fu- er, freaking cold out there," she explains, quickly changing the phrasing.
Bending down to Casey's level, she gives her a warm smile. "Hiya Casey Wacey, you bugging Mommy and Daddy muchie?" she said in a surprisingly singsong voice, ruffling the little tyke's hair. Looking up to Fa, she gives a small grin. "Heck, she's refusing to use firearms even, just some beat up fencing foil. Almost makes me laugh to see her so, well, normal... guess that's why I let her stick near me, in a way..."

((skipping in line for the sake of Casey-waseyness!))
The child had paused to stare at Sarah as the older girl ruffled her hair and used that alien tone of voice. She looked torn between fascination and strong disapproval, or as if she were trying to figure out what Sarah had even said. Too may 'y' sounds! And yet, she couldn't figure out a way to reply that properly expressed her mixed feelings. Casey wound up sticking her tongue out at Sarah and making a grating noise before fleeing to her mother's protection. Ah, zerberts. She'd learned of them surreptitiously and had found that they were the best kind of cover-all curseword!

Kay caught her fleeing daughter and hoisted Casey onto her lap, struggling not to display plain amusement lest she encourage bad habits, but oh, that had been too good. "Casey, honey, why did you you stick your tongue out at Sarah?" she asked the toddler now hiding against her shoulder.
"She said it bad," the kid replied empathetically, if not particularly descriptively. Kay glanced at Agate, taking a minute to puzzle out what Casey was trying to communicate. "Ah," she said, and looked at Sarah, "I don't think she likes the nickname."

"I got the impression," she said with a half-smile before getting back up again. "Ok, note to self, Casey grew out of baby talk..."

She's just as belligerent as her mom, Agate quirked a grin. "Don't worry too much about the cursing; Kay's been trying to instill the girl with an arsenal, I think." He winked in the redhead's direction, obviously teasing the short woman. "Sarah, you don't mind if I go check on the new food you and your new-found friend dropped off? I can toss some more on the little stove, too, if you haven't eaten tonight."
Tilting his head to one side, he added, "So has this Sandy girl been able to tell you about her past? Or is that... you know..." he zipped his finger along his lips demonstratively. He'd run into a lot of people in Malton who just couldn't adjust. Hell, there were more than a few days where he worried about why and how he had adjusted, though he hadn't questioned the fact that he had changed. Agate had the benefit of having others to fall back on during the worst of times, which was something he figured those who were just plain cracked had lacked. Maybe Sandy was one of those: perfectly fine on the outside, cracked up on the ins? Time would tell, if the two stuck around long enough.

Kay smirked and shrugged, but dropped out of the conversation for a moment to comfort the agitated child on her lap. She distracted Casey with a tickle to the ribs, making the little girl yelp with laughter until she had forgotten her momentary nervousness and sat in Kay's lap more happily.

She smiled a bit as she streatched slightly. "By what I get, she's a schoolgirl that came here on a field trip. Between that time and her explaining the point she ran into Theo, though, it's all a blank. Kinda odd, but that's her story and I ain't pressing."

"Field trip?" Agate cast a look at the younger blonde that seemed extremely dubious. Well... what can you do? So long as she wasn't an axe-murderer. Kay was taking that job already.
Shrugging, he began back towards the kitchen. "Funny how fast you catch up around these parts, isn't it?" he asked. "'What's new?' 'Oh, died, came back to life. Ate some garbage. Died again. You know, the usual.'" He chuckled, though whether it was to himself or if anybody followed him remained to be seen...

"I made a tower!" Casey announced, having caught on in a general sense that the conversation was about Things People Had Done Recently. Then she glanced at Sarah and frowned, as if remembering her earlier shyness.
"She was piling her blocks," Kay translated, "made it to three this time." The kid was getting better. " Kay looked at Sarah herself. "She ran into Theo? Where's he these days?" she asked, having missed that part of the conversation earlier.

"No idea, she said it was months ago..." she explained. "I think I can help Agate with lunch, perhaps you can keep an eye on our anime-enriched friend?" Sarah asked Kay.

Agate had disappeared into the kitchen, piping down when he noticed that nobody was following him directly. He was curious (and a hint suspicious, but then again, Agate had always been a paranoid sort of person) about what the new girl, Sandy, had dropped off in the room. Truth be told, he rarely used the kitchen. He did all of his cooking out in the lobby, where he could be out in the open with an ear and an eye on the comings and goings of anyone. From the lobby he could even hear a bit from the main stairwell, in case anyone was heading down from the roof. The kitchen... it felt too isolated to him. Aside from the obsolete fridges piled up along the wide shipping doors out the side of the building, it was boxed in and he didn't like the thought of having to haul a few hundred pounds of metal and plastic to save his ass, should worse come to worse.
But Sandy had dropped everything in the kitchen so here he was. He hummed a few notes under his breath, something he'd picked up from Fa when the other blonde a few weeks ago. Opening up cupboards, looking for the loot that had been dropped, Agate caught ear of someone approaching behind him and paused his search to turn and see who'd followed him. He doubted it was Casey, as the girl had a very distinctive set of footfalls. Either Sarah or the new girl, then, probably. Kay seemed grumpy, so Agate imagined the last thing she'd want was to linger around people... even familiar people like him.
